The Douglas Police urge all residents to sign up to receive emergency alerts and community news. Alerts are delivered directly to your cell phone as a text message, your email address, or both. You can decide what kind of messages you receive (alerts or news) and turn off text messaging during quiet hours such as at night while sleeping.
Types of Emergency Alerts would include missing people, criminal activity in town such as house or car breaks, road closures, etc.
Types of News Alerts would include things like flu shot clinics, town meetings, community events such as parade information and Octoberfest news.
This service is provided free charge from Nixle.com. Over 3,000 departments and communities have signed up for the service. The promise never to sell your information or to send spam on any municipal account. They are not affiliated with the Douglas Police Department and information you provide will be kept by them. This does not replace the Reverse 911 system the town currently uses.

How it works (examples):
Say Douglas Police are looking for a lost child. A Nixle message would be sent out. This message might go to a certain area of town or be broadcast across the entire town. Most immediate way to get the message is cell phone. A text message would come in to your cell phone with a brief message. Within this message will be a hyperlink to a web site with the entire message. The message will include the information of the lost child and instructions on what to do if located.
A serious accident occurred on a street in town and was going to have to be shut down for several hours. While your driving home from work your cell phone receives a text messages alerting you of the road closure. You take alternate route instead of sitting in traffic.
You haven’t seen any notices of Flu Clinic in town. You have been wanting to get a shot when you receive an email about an upcoming Flu Clinic in town.
There are numerous ways this service can help town residents. The only catch is that you need to sign up to receive the notices.
